5-Minute Masala Oats in an Electric Kettle

Hot masala oats made with just an electric kettle and a bowl.
Prep Time 2 minutes
Cook Time 3 minutes
Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rolled or instant oats (about 40 g)
  • 3/4 cup water (about 180 ml)
  • 2 tbsp chopped onion
  • 2 tbsp chopped tomato
  • 1 small green chilli finely chopped (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp chaat masala, garam masala or oats masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp ghee or a few drops of oil (optional)
  • A few coriander leaves (optional)

Equipment

  • 1 Electric kettle
  • 1 Heat-safe bowl
  • 1 Spoon
  • 1 Small knife

Method

  1. Add the water to your electric kettle and bring it to a boil.
  2. While the water is heating, add the oats, chopped onion, tomato, green chilli, turmeric, masala and salt to a heat-safe bowl.
  3. Carefully pour the boiling water over the oats and mix everything well with a spoon.
  4. Cover the bowl with a plate. Let instant oats sit for 3–4 minutes or rolled oats for around 5–6 minutes.
  5. Remove the plate and stir. If the oats look too thick, add a small splash of hot water. If they're too watery, cover them again and wait another minute.
  6. Finish with a little ghee and coriander if you have them. Taste, adjust the salt and enjoy while hot.

Notes

Safety: Only use the electric kettle to boil water. Pour the hot water into a heat-safe bowl and do not cook oats directly inside the kettle unless the manufacturer says it is suitable for cooking food.
