Method
- Add the water to your electric kettle and bring it to a boil.
- While the water is heating, add the oats, chopped onion, tomato, green chilli, turmeric, masala and salt to a heat-safe bowl.
- Carefully pour the boiling water over the oats and mix everything well with a spoon.
- Cover the bowl with a plate. Let instant oats sit for 3โ4 minutes or rolled oats for around 5โ6 minutes.

Notes
Easy Substitutions
No vegetables?
No problem. Make the oats with spices and salt, then add some lemon juice or ghee for extra flavour.
Want more protein?
Add roasted peanuts or have your oats with milk. If you eat eggs, you can also pair them with a boiled egg.
Want them spicier?
Add some red chilli powder, black pepper or an extra green chilli.
Have leftovers?
A spoonful of boiled peas or sweet corn can easily be mixed in too.
Important Kettle Safety
Do not put the oats directly inside your electric kettle unless its manufacturer specifically says it can be used for cooking food.
Most regular electric kettles are designed only for boiling water. Oats and spices can stick to the heating element, leave smells and residue, and may damage the kettle.
The safer method is simple: boil only water in the kettle and pour it over the oats in a separate heat-safe bowl.
Be careful while pouring boiling water and handling the bowl because both can become very hot.
These oats are best eaten fresh. Don’t leave cooked oats sitting in your hostel room for several hours, especially if you don’t have refrigeration.
FAQs
Can I cook oats directly in an electric kettle?
It’s better not to. Most electric kettles are designed for boiling water rather than cooking food. Oats can stick to the inside and make the kettle difficult to clean. Boiling the water separately and pouring it over your oats works well and keeps your kettle clean.
Which oats are best for this recipe?
Instant or quick-cook oats are the easiest option because they soften within a few minutes. Rolled oats also work, but you’ll need to leave them covered for a little longer.
Can I make masala oats without vegetables?
Yes. You can make a very basic version using oats, hot water, salt and your preferred masala. Adding a little lemon juice or ghee afterward gives it more flavour.
Are masala oats filling for breakfast?
Oats contain fibre and can make a convenient breakfast. You can make the meal more substantial by adding ingredients such as roasted peanuts or pairing it with milk or an egg, depending on your diet.
